117 West Chester Park – Front Reception Room

One of the largest profiles in Old Boston’s catalog, this complex design was chosen for the most exclusive South-End buildings of the late 1850s and early ’60s. Such was the home of William F. Nichols, a successful dry-goods merchant, at 117 West Chester Park. An elaborate, sinuous swirl of foliage and flowers is framed in an elegant cornice, further enhanced by a crowning pattern. Accompanied by an eclectic combination of wallpapers, this beautiful crown-molding profile was captured in all its glory in an 1870s photograph of Mr. Nichols’s front reception room.
